TuskHead Is Building His Own Sound With “Dutchicana”
TuskHead is the musical project of Dutch songwriter Patrick van Zandwijk, whose music brings together country, Americana and heartland rock with a perspective shaped by life on both sides of the Atlantic.
Van Zandwijk calls that sound Dutchicana.

His interest in country music began in an unexpected place. The fictional K-Rose radio station in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas introduced him to artists and songwriters including Ed Bruce, Jerry Reed and Whitey Shafer. What started as curiosity grew into a lasting connection with American roots music and eventually brought him to the United States to write, record and perform.
That journey continues with his latest EP, One Step Forward & Two Steps Back. Released through Knoxville-based Migrant Records, the six-track project was recorded at Famous London Recording Studio in Knoxville and reflects TuskHead’s growing connection to East Tennessee. He has also recorded in Texas, including sessions at Modern Electric in Dallas with members of The Texas Gentlemen.

The songs get personal. “Out Of My Mind” focuses on the frustration and isolation that can come with mental illness, while “Home” moves into a darker emotional space. Patrick puts the reason for sharing those experiences simply: “If others can relate and learn that they’re not alone, then that’s something I’m glad I can help make happen.”
His manager, Samanthalee Greco, describes the project as “raw and unflinching,” saying it explores “the struggle of trying to move forward while your own mind is pulling you back.” She also credits Migrant Records and Famous London Recording Studio with giving the songs room to stay honest.
“Dutchicana (Ain’t Country Enough),” featuring Barn & Belle, brings another part of his story forward. The track addresses the gatekeeping Van Zandwijk has encountered around what country music should sound like and where it should come from. Instead of distancing himself from his Dutch roots, he has made them part of his musical identity.
TuskHead also puts his own stamp on a country standard with a cover of “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys.” It’s a fitting choice for an artist whose music is rooted in classic country influences but shaped by his own background and point of view. Watch the cover on YouTube.
